Here is a memo I jotted down, while listening to John talk about this paper. I FOUND IT IN A TEXT FILE, NAMED "2008- memo re complementary relations, aftermath.txt", SO AT LEAST I THINK IT IS ABOUT THIS PAPER :
"But John himself went on talking for half an hour mostly wishing more people would understand the transfer of the same idea about a RELATION, from the Boolean algebra of De Morgan and Peirce to the geometry of Harary and how brilliant it was that Harary conceived the idea of structures which is an integration of geometry and Boolean algebra which had never been done before, and how Harary was not interested in bringing the concept of his structural models to ordinary folks, but Warfield wanted to do exactly that and and that is why Warfield put WORDS into the inter-related geometric symbols, thus making it INTERPRETIVE structural modeling, and now Warfield is trying to get people to think in structural inter-related geometric worded symbols, because if they do then uncounted subtle relations can be grasped by engineering and other disciplines and lead to the eradication of complexity. Warfield laments that nowadays systems scientists only talk the theory and never advertise useful application of the theory. So that's what the Interactive Management Workshop Reports are all about. They show that Boolean Algebra, matrices and structural modeling can be interchanged, that it is possible to use all three or only some of them to work with complex problems, and that people are doing it right now, but he wishes more people would do so. He says he has written about all this over and over in his papers and can't get the persons who should be studying this hard mathematics to even look at it, meanwhile in other countries students have done so and they are putting the methodology into successful applications. He just got a major accolade from students at Sun Yat Sen university in Taiwan, last week. He says the people in this country don't want to work hard enough to study and understand the math and that is what is going to hold the U.S. back in the future. By this time Warfield was discouraged and tired and I got him to go into the kitchen and soak his broken wrist which is healing so slowly thus contributing to his discouragement. Warfield says not to write anything about De Morgan and Harary and because he has already done so in many of his papers and if people want to study it they can find it. He said that no one understood what a RELATION really is until Norbert Weiner wrote a paper on it about 1913 after studying Peirce and Boole and De Morgan, and then Friedman's paper in 1979 used the Weiner's work to support Friedman's thinking on relationships, and Warfield didn't understand it completely until he read Friedman, then subsequentlyWarfield studied Weiner, Peirce, Boole, and De Morgan." And so it goes. As for me, I do not understand it, I can go no further than Yang and Yin, and I just want poor John to quit talking abut relations and get into the kitchen to soak his broken wrist.
THIS NOTE MUST HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN 2008 WHEN HE BROKE HIS WRIST.
