Bugl’s article appeared in William H. Newell’s AIS NEWSLETTER. AIS = acronym for Association for Integrative Studies, a professional society in which John held membership during his teaching career. Not everyone understands the mathematics behind Warfield's work, but Professor Bugl did. He filled up 5 typewritten pages discussing graph theory and how it might have significance on many different fields of endeavor. His original article appears on three printed pages of the AIS newsletter, but my OCR version is 5 typed pages. The book review was a pleasant surprise for John Warfield when he opened the May 2004 AIS newsletter. He had no idea the article had been written, and had never met the mathematician who wrote and submitted it to Bill Newell. It is quite a long article and a very well done informational discussion of the history of mathematicians, and of graph theory. Also it was complimentary of Warfield's work. Who could ask for more? At last someone actually reads the book, understands the book, and sees its value.
John did not write him a letter of thanks. "Why not?" I said. John said, "It is gauche to write thanks to a reviewer." The next day Warfield mailed to Paul Bugl, Associate Professor, University of Hartford a copy of Understanding Complexity, out of gratitude. No note from Warfield was attached, however.
I have made copies of the Bugl article for our files and also maybe we will make a few photocopies to give away when Warfield next gives someone a copy of his book the Math of Structure. Only one or two or three people so far have even bought Math of Structure, but John has given away copies of the book to friends and colleagues hoping at least someone will read it. He would like to see somebody use it for a college class, but has about given up hope on that. (r.w. circa 2006. )
